From the Vault: Alexander Hamilton Memorial

On this day in 1804 the Coast Guard's Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton, was shot and killed in duel at Weehawken, N.J., by the infamous Aaron Burr. Hamilton was the first Secretary of the Treasury and, among other things, established the Revenue Marine in 1790, which would later become the U.S. Coast Guard.

This piece is from my personal vault...before I joined the Coast Guard, I had a love of Hamilton's story and the history of the American Revolution. It's one of the primary I joined!
A little about the piece: this was done in high school for my American History class. Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson were bitter rivals while serving in Washington's administration and even after. It was because Hamilton conceded his personal beliefs and put his support behind Jefferson in the election of 1804, degrading Burr in the process, that Burr challenged him to a duel.

I am sure he had a bit o' fun now and then. :)

Please take a moment to remember Hamilton today.
